If the directory is currently empty, then the calculator will display the image shown right. Calculator Tip The meaning of the question about "Initialize directory?" is that the calculator has tried to find the two special files HP39DIR.000 and HP39DIR.CUR which tell it what files are in the directory and has, of course, been unable to retrieve them since it is an empty directory. It is asking if it can go ahead and create them itself. The program will respond with message shown right. As it says, you should press the key on the calculator to continue the process. You will then see a series of messages on the computer and on the calculator telling you that files are being transmitted. At the end of the process your aplet (or program, note etc...) will have been saved. You can re-use this directory later to save any other objects from the calculator. Next time you use it you will not see the message asking if you want to "Initialize directory?", as the two special files are now present. They will be automatically updated each time you save to the directory. Calculator Tip DO NOT edit, rename, or otherwise interfere with these files once they are on the computer. If you do then you risk corrupting them so that the calculator can't read them. If you want to edit a note or aplet on the computer then use the right software. 209
