The physical address is the MAC address (Go to Glossary). 5 Note the IP address of the target PC you want to check connectivity between and type "ping " Example: ping 192.168.0.127 • If you obtain an answer, this it means that the 2 computers can see each other and communicate. • If a request timeout occurs, you will need to change your LAN configuration. To change your LAN configuration: 1 First, try to place the 2 PCs on the same sub-network. If you are allowed to change the network settings yourself, go to TCP/IP properties and check "use the following IP address". 2 Enter the following settings for the PCs: PC 1: IP address: 192.168.1.1 Sub net mask: 255.255.255.0 Default gateway: 192.168.1.1 Preferred DNS: 192.168.1.1 PC 2: IP address: 192.168.1.2 Sub net mask: 255.255.255.0 Default gateway: 192.168.1.2 Preferred DNS: 192.168.1.2 3 Validate the change and restart both PCs, if prompted to do so by your OS. 4 On PC 1, run COMMAND or CMD, and type PING 192.168.1.2. If it still fails, check the cables between the 2 PCs and your network adapter hardware. • Regarding the cable connection between the 2 PCs, if connected through a hub or a switch (necessary if you have more than 2 PCs on the network) a green light will be activated when the connection works on their port. • On the network adapter hardware side, some lights will become brighter and/or blink when the network link is running. 15
