Setup to test PXE feature To setup and test PXE capabilities, the following assumptions are made to simplify the procedure and explanation: 1 The tests will be performed on a local area network, where there are at least two different PCs. It is possible to have more than two, but all the PCs should be in the same sub-network - no gateway or external server is required for routing data from one PC to another. All PCs are part of the same Ethernet segment. 2 PXE tests require that one PC is equipped with a PXE server. HP provides PXE servers to help deployment in a user's software environment. They can also find a list of PXE shareware items available on network vendors' web sites. A further explanation on how to use a particular evaluation PXE server from Intel is also provided at the following URL: http://www.intel.com/labs/manage/wfm/tools/pxepdk20/index. htm 3 The PXE server evaluation program and the RIS server will be performed on a Microsoft Windows 2000 Server Operating System. Please note that Intel PXE PDK requires a server version of NT4, or Windows 2000. RIS also requires a server version of Microsoft Operating System and was introduced on Windows 2000. Other PXE servers may not require a server version of the OS. 4 The clients need to have a LAN adapter that is PXE enabled. PXE 2.0 will be the reference specification for this document. 5 The PXE server should only have ONE network interface enabled when performing the PXE tests. All other Network Adapters should be disabled (right click on Network neighborhood, Properties. then on all Local Area connection icons. Select the one connected to your network test and click on Disable). 6 Create a bootable floppy disk on which to create the PXE image from which the PXE client will boot. 6
