Taking Photographs-Advanced Photography Avoiding "Grainy" Photographs: Noise Reduction When sensitivity (ISO equivalency) settings above ISO 100 equivalent or shutter speeds slower than 1/ s are used, "noise" in the form of randomly- 15 spaced brightly-colored pixels may appear in photographs, particularly in shadows.
