5. When Autofocus Fails The camera's AF system is highly precise and can focus most subjects. However, autofocus may not be achieved (the in-focus indicator blinks) with certain subjects such as the following: a. Very low contrast subjects. Ex.: Blue sky; single-color, flat surfaces, etc. b. Extremely backlit, reflective subjects. Ex.: A highly-reflective car body. c. Overlapping foreground and background subjects. Ex.: A caged animal. In such cases, lock the focus on an object at the same distance as the subject and recompose or focus manually as described below. 1Set the focus mode switch on the no lens to M. Turn the focusing ring until the subject is in sharp focus. EUS When focus is achieved manually, the active focusing point flashes in red and the -Ar in-focus indicator lights. 39
