AMD Opteron microarchitecture We use AMD Opteron 6100 series processors with 8 and 12 cores in our 2P and 4P ProLiant servers. AMD produces the AMD Opteron 6100 series processor with a 45-nm process. The processor features Direct Connect Architecture 2.0 and contains two dies on a single multi-chip module (MCM) package (see Figure 3). Each die has four or six cores, a dual-channel memory controller-which supports up to three DDR3 DIMMs per channel at 1333 MT/s-and four Hyper Transport 3.0 links. (See "I/O architecture") Each core has an L1 Cache (64 KB for data and 64 KB for instructions), a 512 KB L2 cache, and a shared 6 MB L3 cache. The 8-core and 12-core AMD Opteron processors run at speeds of up to 2.4 GHz and 2.3 GHz, respectively. They operate from 80 W to 105 W. The processors fit into the 1944-pin G34 socket and use the AMD SR5690/SP5100 chipset. Figure 3.
