Installing and Configuring Enhanced DFS 3.0 Considerations for Enhanced DFS 3.0 Installation and Configuration Considerations for Enhanced DFS 3.0 Installation and Configuration HP recommends considering the following points for Enhanced DFS 3.0 Installation and Configuration: • Installation requires about 21 MB of disk space. • The default cache location is /var/opt/dce/adm/dfs/cache. The default maximum cache size is 10 MB. The volume that contains the cache must have enough free space to accommodate the maximum cache size. Also, do not allocate more than 90% of the cache directory's partition for a disk cache. If you are not using 90% of the cache, increase the number of chunks. Unless users on single-user machines access very large databases, a 40 MB cache is usually sufficient. On multi-user machines, caches of 60-80 MB may be appropriate. • Device swap is strongly recommended over file system swap. • /var/opt/dce appears to require about 2 Mb of disk space in total. Note that log and database files located in /var/opt/dce/dfs can grow without bound, and so must be monitored for disk consumption. Also note that there are additional DCE logs in /var/opt/dce, including config/dce_config.log, dced/dced.log, svc/fatal.log, svc/error.log, and svc/warning.log. • DFS Installation Size ❒ Client (Assuming a typical, single-user, graphic desktop, HP-UX workstation): A minimum of 64 MB of ram for a client-only system A minimum of 170 MB of swap space for a client-only system (A client DCE/DFS system adds about 52 MB to needed swap space) A maximum of 40 MB of DFS cache disk space A minimum of 21 MB of disk space to install the DFS 3.0 client software ❒ Server (Assuming zero-user, non-desktop, HP-UX workstation or server): A minimum of 64 MB of ram for a server system A minimum of 145 MB of swap space for a simple file server system (A DCE/DFS File Server system needs about 80 MB of additional swap space) A minimum of 152 MB of swap space for a file/fileset database server 25

Installing and Configuring Enhanced DFS 3.0
Considerations for Enhanced DFS 3.0 Installation and Configuration
Considerations for Enhanced DFS 3.0 Installation and
Configuration
HP recommends considering the following points for Enhanced DFS 3.0
Installation and Configuration:
Installation requires about 21 MB of disk space.
The default cache location is
/var/opt/dce/adm/dfs/cache
. The default
maximum cache size is 10 MB. The volume that contains the cache must have
enough free space to accommodate the maximum cache size. Also, do not
allocate more than 90% of the cache directory’s partition for a disk cache. If you
are not using 90% of the cache, increase the number of chunks. Unless users on
single-user machines access very large databases, a 40 MB cache is usually
sufficient. On multi-user machines, caches of 60-80 MB may be appropriate.
Device swap is strongly recommended over file system swap.
/var/opt/dce
appears to require about 2 Mb of disk space in total. Note that log
and database files located in
/var/opt/dce/dfs
can grow without bound, and so
must be monitored for disk consumption. Also note that there are additional DCE
logs in
/var/opt/dce
, including
config/dce_config.log
,
dced/dced.log
,
svc/fatal.log
,
svc/error.log
, and
svc/warning.log
.
DFS Installation Size
Client (Assuming a typical, single-user, graphic desktop, HP-UX
workstation):
A minimum of 64 MB of ram for a client-only system
A minimum of 170 MB of swap space for a client-only system (A client
DCE/DFS system adds about 52 MB to needed swap space)
A maximum of 40 MB of DFS cache disk space
A minimum of 21 MB of disk space to install the DFS 3.0 client software
Server (Assuming zero-user, non-desktop, HP-UX workstation or server):
A minimum of 64 MB of ram for a server system
A minimum of 145 MB of swap space for a simple file server system (A
DCE/DFS File Server system needs about 80 MB of additional swap
space)
A minimum of 152 MB of swap space for a file/fileset database server
