Using passwords Hard-disk passwords Two types of hard-disk password help protect the information on your hard disk. When either type of hard-disk password has been set, the information on your hard disk cannot be accessed without one of the passwords. These are the two types of hard-disk password: User hard-disk password Master hard-disk password-which requires a user password When a user hard-disk password is set, no one can access files and applications on the hard disk without first typing the password. The system administrator sets the master hard-disk password; no one else knows or uses it. Then the system administrator sets a user password and tells it to the user. The user can change the user password. The master password, like a master key, enables the administrator to access the hard disk even if the user has changed the user password. Attention If you forget your hard-disk password, there is no way to reset your password or recover data from the hard disk. You must take your computer to an IBM reseller or marketing representative to replace the hard-disk drive. A fee will be charged for parts and service. To set a hard-disk password, refer to the online user's guide. Windows password When you start your ThinkPad computer and the Windows operating system opens, Windows will require you to enter a user ID and a password. Hard-disk passwords
