Adaptec Storage Enclosure 335SAS ● 21 Silencing the Alarm If the enclosure fan fails, an alarm sounds. To silence the alarm, use the Silence feature in the Adaptec Storage Manager (ASM) software application. For more information, see the controller's manual. Note: The ASM software application is included with an Adaptec SATA or SAS controller or through the Adaptec website. Hot-swapping Disk Drives Failed disk drives can be hot-swapped (replaced while the server is powered on). Follow the disk drive manufacturer's installation instructions. To hot-swap a disk drive: 1 Stop all I/O activity on the disk drive. ! Caution: Removing a disk drive during I/O activity can hang the host system and may cause data loss. 2 Press the lever button on the drive carrier, then pull open the lever to release the drive carrier from the enclosure. 3 Allow the disk drive to fully spin down (approximately one minute). Warning: Removing a disk drive before it has fully spun down may result in disk drive damage and possible personal injury. 4 Gently pull the drive carrier out of the enclosure. 5 Remove the failed disk drive from the drive carrier and install a new disk drive, see Step 2 on page 11. Replacing the Cooling Fan Before you replace the cooling fan, remove the jumper from J42 to enable the fan function. See jumper location on page 9 To replace the fan, follow the instructions for Removing the Fan (Optional) on page 12.

Silencing the Alarm
If the enclosure fan fails, an alarm sounds. To silence the alarm, use the
Silence feature in the Adaptec Storage Manager (ASM) software
application. For more information, see the controller’s manual.
Note:
The ASM software application is included with an Adaptec SATA
or SAS controller or through the Adaptec website.
Hot-swapping Disk Drives
Failed disk drives can be
hot-swapped
(replaced while the server is
powered on). Follow the disk drive manufacturer’s installation
instructions.
To hot-swap a disk drive:

Stop all I/O activity on the disk drive.
Caution:
Removing a disk drive during I/O activity can hang the
host system and may cause data loss.

Press the lever button on the drive carrier, then pull open the lever to
release the drive carrier from the enclosure.

Allow the disk drive to fully spin down (approximately one minute).

Removing a disk drive before it has fully spun down
may result in disk drive damage and possible personal injury.

Gently pull the drive carrier out of the enclosure.

Remove the failed disk drive from the drive carrier and install a new
