Glossary Acronyms and Abbreviations DTMF EMS ERI Dual-Tone Multi Frequency (or "touchtone") is a method used to communicate keys pressed on the phone. Pressing a key generates two simultaneous tones, one for the row and one for the column to determine which key was pressed. Enhanced Messaging Service is an extension to SMS for cellular phones available on specific networks. An EMS enabled phone can send and receive messages with special text formatting (such as bold or italic), animations, pictures, icons, sound effects, and special ring tones. EMS messages sent to non-EMS devices will be displayed as SMS transmissions. Enhanced Roaming Indicator is a feature to indicate whether a mobile phone is on its home system, a partner network, or a roaming network. Many phones indicate home vs. roaming as an icon, but ERI capable phones can clearly indicate third "partner network" status. 100 VX5300 GPS Global Positioning System is a system of satellites, computers, and receivers able to determine the latitude and longitude of a specific receiver on Earth. NAM SID Number Assignment Module is how the phone stores the phone number and its electronic serial number. A multiple NAM phone can register with multiple service providers and be set to automatically switch between programmed phone numbers for service provider areas. System Identification is a number transmitted by base stations to identify a wireless system which conforms to a TIA cellular or PCS standard.
