Configure your data and fax software • CONFIGURE YOUR PHONE FOR GPRS DATA Before you can use your phone as a wireless modem on your service provider's GPRS data network, your phone must be configured for GPRS data services. Acquire GPRS modem settings from your service provider Your service provider should supply you with the GPRS Access Point Name (APN). The access point name is used by your phone to locate your service provider's gateway to the Internet. APNs look similar to other Internet-style names or addresses: internet.yourserviceprovider.com Your service provider may have already pre-programmed this information into your phone. Tip: Your phone can store up to 5 different GPRS modem configurations and APNs. Enter GPRS modem settings 1 From the Start screen, press Menu 4-7-2 (Settings > GPRS modem settings > Edit active access point), then press Select. 2 Scroll to GPRS access point, then press Edit. 3 Enter the name of the GPRS access point (supplied by your service provider), then press OK. 4 Scroll to Alias for access point, then press Rename. 5 Enter a user-friendly name for this configuration (example: My Internet), then press OK. Activate an access point Once you enter an APN and alias (user-friendly name) for an access point, you must activate that APN for use. 1 From the Start screen, press Menu 4-7 (Settings > GPRS modem settings), then press Select. 2 Press Select again to view the list of available access point configurations. 3 Scroll to the desired access point alias, then press Activate. 9 Your phone is now configured to access the Internet using the selected APN. However, you must now configure your data software to establish a connection to the Internet using this APN. • MICROSOFT DIAL-UP NETWORKING FOR GPRS DATA You can use Microsoft's Dial-up Networking feature to connect to the Internet through your wireless servic provider's access point. However, instead of dialing a traditional phone number, the dialing string to access the GPRS data network is: *99# Create a new connection-GPRS data call 1 Double-click the My Computer icon, then double-click the Dial-up Networking folder. Windows 2000 and Windows ME users: Click Start, point to Settings, then click Dial-up Networking. 2 Double-click the Make New Connection icon. 3 Type a name for your new connection (example: Internet-GPRS). 4 Click the drop-down arrow and select your Nokia phone as the modem to use, then click Next. 5 Enter the GPRS network access code: *99# , then click Finish. You may need to remove area code information so only the access code appears. [ 31 ]
