English 15 Checking the Lawn Mower NOTICE To prevent damage to the lawn mower, only operate the self-propel lever when the engine is running. 14.2 Deactivating Drive System To deactivate drive system: ► Release the self-propel lever. ► Wait until the mower stops moving. 15 Checking the Lawn Mower 15.1 Testing the Controls Switch lever and self-propel lever ► Shut off the engine, 12.1. ► Pull the switch lever and the self-propel lever completely in the direction of the handle and release again. ► If the switch lever or the self-propel lever is sluggish or does not spring back to the starting position: Do not use the lawn mower and con‐ sult an authorized STIHL servicing dealer. Blade Brake Clutch ► Start the engine, 11.1. Repeat the following procedure three times: ► Engage the mowing blade, 13.1. You should hear the mowing blade turning. ► Release the switch lever to disengage the mowing blade, 13.2. Within a few seconds, the mowing blade should stop. ► If the mowing blade does not stop within a few seconds: Do not use the lawn mower and con‐ sult an authorized STIHL servicing dealer. 16 During Operation 16.1 Adjusting the Cutting Height It is possible to set 7 cutting heights: - 1.0 in. (25 mm) = Position 1 - 1.4 in. (35 mm) = Position 2 - 1.8 in. (45 mm) = Position 3 - 2.2 in. (55 mm) = Position 4 - 2.6 in. (65 mm) = Position 5 - 3.0 in. (75 mm) = Position 6 - 3.4 in. (85 mm) = Position 7 The positions are indicated on the lawn mower. To adjust the cutting height: ► Shut off the engine and wait for the mowing blade to come to a complete stop, 12.1. ► Place the lawn mower on a level surface. ► Pull the cutting height adjustment lever (1) upward and hold it. ► Set the lawn mower in the desired position by raising and lowering it. The current cutting height can be read on the cutting height indicator (2). ► Release the cutting height adjustment lever (1). The lawn mower locks into place. 16.2 Mowing WARNING ■ Always wear proper clothing and protective apparel, including proper eye protection, when operating your lawn mower, 5.4. Keep bystanders at least 50 ft. (15 m) away from the work area, 5.7.5. Work carefully and main‐ tain proper control of the lawn mower, 5.7.3. WARNING ■ To reduce the risk of serious or fatal injuries to the operator or bystanders, keep hands, feet and other parts of the body away from the mowing blade, 5.7.3. Do not touch the mowing blade while the spark plug boot is connected. Never touch the moving mowing blade with your hand or any part of your body, 5.7.5. The mower is equipped with a multi-blade and can be used for mowing or mulching. ► Remove the pre-assembled mulching insert for mowing, 8.2.2. 20 0478-111-8602-A

NOTICE

Wait until the mower stops moving.

Testing the Controls
Switch lever and self-propel lever
Shut off the engine,

If the switch lever or the self-propel lever is
sluggish or does not spring back to the starting
position: Do not use the lawn mower and con‐
sult an authorized STIHL servicing dealer.
Blade Brake Clutch
Start the engine,

Engage the mowing blade,

You should hear the mowing blade turning.
Release the switch lever to disengage the
mowing blade,
13.2.
Within a few seconds, the mowing blade
should stop.
If the mowing blade does not stop within a few
seconds: Do not use the lawn mower and con‐
sult an authorized STIHL servicing dealer.

During Operation
16.1
Adjusting the Cutting Height
It is possible to set 7 cutting heights:
1.0 in. (25 mm) = Position 1
1.4 in. (35 mm) = Position 2
1.8 in. (45 mm) = Position 3
2.2 in. (55 mm) = Position 4
2.6 in. (65 mm) = Position 5
3.0 in. (75 mm) = Position 6
3.4 in. (85 mm) = Position 7
The positions are indicated on the lawn mower.
To adjust the cutting height:
Shut off the engine and wait for the mowing
blade to come to a complete stop,

Place the lawn mower on a level surface.
Pull the cutting height adjustment lever (1)
upward and hold it.
Set the lawn mower in the desired position by
raising and lowering it.
The current cutting height can be read on the
cutting height indicator (2).
Release the cutting height adjustment
lever (1).
The lawn mower locks into place.
