5 IMPORTANT SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS - If mowing and the mown grass is to be ejected to the rear: the grass bag is detached and the discharge flap is closed. - The mowing blade is correctly attached. - Genuine STIHL accessories for this lawn mower are attached. - The accessories are correctly attached. - Spring-loaded mechanisms are free from dam‐ age and working. - The mowing blade stops within a few seconds when the switch lever is released. 5.7.2 Before Operation WARNING ■ Misuse or unauthorized use may result in per‐ sonal injury and property damage. - Use the lawn mower only as described in this instruction manual. ■ Minors should never be allowed to use this power tool. Bystanders, especially children, and animals should not be allowed in the area where it is in use. Accidents can occur if the operator is not alert to the presence of chil‐ dren. Children are often attracted to the machine and mowing activities. Never assume that children will remain where you last saw them. Keep children under the watchful eye of a responsible adult other than the operator. Use extra care when approaching blind cor‐ ners, shrubs, trees or other objects that may block your view of a child. ■ To reduce the risk of fire and explosion: - Check fuel system for leaks, especially the visible parts, (e.g., filler cap). - Securely mount the spark plug boot on the spark plug. - Do not start the engine if the fuel system has leaks or the lawn mower is otherwise damaged. Have the lawn mower repaired by an authorized STIHL servicing dealer before using it. ■ Using a lawn mower that is modified, dam‐ aged, improperly adjusted or maintained, or not completely and securely assembled can lead to a malfunction and increase the risk of serious personal injury or death. - Never operate a lawn mower that is modi‐ fied, damaged, improperly maintained or not completely and securely assembled. - Always check your lawn mower for proper condition and operation before starting work, particularly the switch lever, and make a visual inspection of the mowing blade. 0478-111-8602-A English - Ensure that the switch lever moves freely and always springs back to the locked position when released. - Never attempt to modify or override the controls or safety devices in any way. - If your lawn mower or any part is dam‐ aged or does not function properly, take it to your authorized STIHL servicing dealer. Do not use the lawn mower until the prob‐ lem has been corrected. ■ Never use your mower with a damaged grass bag. - Inspect the grass bag frequently and replace with an authorized replacement if there are signs of wear or deterioration. ■ Before starting the engine: - Read and follow the instructions on start‐ ing the engine, 11.1 and in the engine instruction manual. ■ To help reduce the risk of serious personal injury or death from unintentional starting: - Avoid contacting the switch lever when grasping the handle of the lawn mower. - Always shut off the engine before assem‐ bling, transporting, adjusting, inspecting, cleaning, servicing, maintaining or storing the lawn mower, and any time it is not in use. - Always remove the spark plug boot before assembling, inspecting, cleaning, servic‐ ing or maintaining the lawn mower. - Never leave the lawn mower unattended when the engine is running. ■ Before starting the engine, take the following steps to reduce the risk of personal injury from thrown objects, loss of control or inadvertent contact with the mowing blade: - Be sure that the mowing blade is clear of you and all other obstructions and objects, including the ground. - Read and follow the instructions on start‐ ing the engine, 11.1. 5.7.3 Holding and Controlling the Lawn Mower WARNING ■ To maintain a firm grip and properly control your lawn mower: - Operate the mower at walking pace at all times - never run. - Keep the handles clean and dry at all times.
