2. While holding down the Load/Eject button, press the Operate button to turn on the printer. Wait for the paper to load, then release the buttons. The 360 dpi self test begins by printing in black ink on the first and last lines of the first sheet of paper to measure the page length. Note: If the self test does not begin, turn off the printer and repeat step 2. You may need to hold down the buttons a few seconds longer. If you installed the optional Color Upgrade Kit, the self test prints in color. If you want to run the 180 dpi self test, turn on the printer while holding down the LF/FF button. The 180 dpi self test always prints in black, even when the Color Upgrade Kit has been installed. 3. To end the self test, press the Pause button. If there is paper in the paper path, press the Load/Eject button to eject it. Then turn off the printer. Otherwise, the test continues until the paper in the sheet feeder runs out. c Caution: Do not turn off the printer before pressing the Pause button. If the quality of the test output is not good, clean the print heads as described in Chapter 3 of the Reference Guide. Then print a demonstration page or another self test to check the print quality. You may need to repeat these procedures several times to fully solve the problem. You may also need to calibrate your printer. After connecting the printer to your PC and installing the printer driver as explained in the following sections, calibrate your printer using the calibration utility program that came with your printer.
