Building a Virtual Hard Disk to Boot any PC or TC Mixing ACPI & Non-ACPI Computers Advanced Control and Power Interface (ACPI) is considered by Windows 2000/XP/2003 OS as the root-most device in a PC architecture. A Windows 2000/XP/2003 installation that was made for an ACPI enabled computer will not be able to boot a non-ACPI computer, even if Neoware UbiBoot has been applied to the system HD. In case you have to mix ACPI and non ACPI computers that must boot from the same HD (or HD image, cloned HD etc), you must perform your original Windows® 2000/XP/2003 installation on a non ACPI computer, or downgrade your HAL. Mixing Unicore & Multicore (or multi-CPUs) Computers HAL Selection The HAL to use in order to take advantage of multi-CPUs (or multicore CPUs) is the ACPI Multiprocessor PC HAL, ACPI APIC MP (HALMACPI.DLL). Note that this HAL cannot be used on Unicore CPU computers. The Unicore capable HALs can be used to boot Multicore computers, but in this case only one core is used. This is not recommended for performance reasons. If you have to manage a fleet of computers that comprise Unicore and Multicore computers, it is recommended that you create several different images with the appropriate HALs. Choosing a Specific HAL at Windows Installation You can specify the HAL to use when performing the Windows installation. If the Standard PC HAL is chosen, Windows will be installed with APM (Advanced Power Management) support, not ACPI. APM is the predecessor of ACPI. If you perform Windows installation on a non-ACPI compatible PC, Windows will generally be installed with Standard PC HAL. If you don't have a non-ACPI PC when you perform your installation of Mixing ACPI & Non-ACPI Computers 115
