Do I Need to Reboot? Adding Clients to Windows Domains add to domain again using scripts run by the clients when they bootup. It is possible to use automated scripts that use the Microsoft netdom utility in order to perform the "leave domain" and "join domain" tasks. Netdom can even be configured to reboot the computer after it has performed "leave domain" or "join domain" tasks, if you validated that this step is needed. Netdom for Windows 2000 sp4 clients is available at the following Internet address: http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/downloads/servicepacks/SP4/supporttools.asp Netdom for Windows XP sp2 clients is available at the following Internet address: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=49ae8576-9bb9-4126-9761-ba8011fabf38&displaylang=en Usually, depending on each system configuration, you do not need to reboot after the client leaves the domain and before it can join it again. However, it has been reported that joining a domain has failed when you have not rebooted, while it succeeded when it has been rebooted and the client opened the System volume in CVolwrite/ Normal mode during the leave/join domain operation. All that we can recommend is that you do your own tests. Testing domain integration without rebooting can be done as follows: • After you added the first client to the domain, change the default writing mode to CVolwrite/Volatile. • Use at least 3 client computers. If you use less than 3 clients, the test is not relevant. • Try to remove the clients from the domain and then join them to the domain again without rebooting between the leave domain and join domain step. Do I Need to
Reboot?
Usually, depending on each system configuration, you do not need
to reboot after the client leaves the domain and before it can join it
again. However, it has been reported that joining a domain has failed
when you have not rebooted, while it succeeded when it has been
rebooted and the client opened the System volume in CVolwrite/
Normal mode during the leave/join domain operation.
All that we can recommend is that you do your own tests. Testing
domain integration without rebooting can be done as follows:
After you added the first client to the domain, change the default
writing mode to CVolwrite/Volatile.
Use at least 3 client computers. If you use less than 3 clients, the
test is not relevant.
Try to remove the clients from the domain and then join them to
the domain again without rebooting between the leave domain
and join domain step.
