Chapter 6. Installing, removing, or replacing hardware This chapter provides instructions on how to install, remove, or replace hardware for your storage array. For a list of ThinkServer options, go to: http://www.lenovo.com/thinkserver Guidelines This topic provides some guidelines that you should read and understand before using your storage array. Precautions Before you use the storage array, ensure that you read and understand the following precautions: • Before using the product, ensure that you read and understand the multilingual safety instructions and the Lenovo Limited Warranty (LLW) on the documentation DVD that comes with the product. Reading and understanding the safety instructions reduces the risk of personal injury and damage to your product. • Before you install optional hardware devices, ensure that the storage array is working correctly. If the storage array is not working correctly, see Chapter 7 "Troubleshooting and diagnostics" on page 59 to do basic troubleshooting. If the problem cannot be solved, see Chapter 8 "Getting information, help, and service" on page 63. • Observe good housekeeping in the area where you are working. Put removed covers and other parts in a safe place. • Do not attempt to lift an object that you think is too heavy for you. If you have to lift a heavy object, observe the following precautions: - Ensure that you can stand safely without slipping. - Distribute the weight of the object equally between your feet. - Use a slow lifting force. Never move suddenly or twist when you lift a heavy object. - To avoid straining the muscles in your back, lift by standing or by pushing up with your leg muscles. • Ensure that you have an adequate number of properly grounded electrical outlets for the storage array, monitor, and other devices. • Back up all important data before you make changes to drives. • You do not have to turn off the storage array to install or replace a hot-swap power supply or a hot-swap hard disk drive. However, you must turn off the storage array before performing any step that involves installing, removing, or replacing non-hot-swap devices or components. • When you are finished working on the storage array, reinstall all safety shields, guards, labels, and ground wires. Handling static-sensitive devices Attention: Do not open the static-protective package that contains the new part until the defective part has been removed from the storage array and you are ready to install the new part. Static electricity, although harmless to you, can seriously damage storage array components and parts. Any storage array part containing transistors or integrated circuits (ICs) should be considered sensitive to electrostatic discharge (ESD). ESD damage can occur when there is a difference in charge between objects. Protect against ESD damage by equalizing the charge so that the machine, the part, the work mat, and the person handling the part are all at the same charge. © Copyright Lenovo 2014 31
