Starting Your Escort Ignition Understanding the Positions of the Ignition Your vehicle may have one of the following lock cylinders depending on when it was built: The ignition lock cylinders LOCK locks the steering wheel when the key is removed. It also locks the console-mounted gearshift on vehicles with automatic transaxles. To turn the key to this position on an automatic transaxle vehicle, the shift control lever must be in P (Park). RWARNING LOCK position does not lock the gearshift on floor-mounted manual transaxle gearshifts. If the parking brake is not set and the gearshift is moved out of gear, your vehicle may move unexpectedly and injure someone. 105
