496A/0197 WHITE PAPER (cont.) ... Step 4: Downgrade the HAL The ProLiant 4500 and ProLiant 5000 Servers require different HALs for multiprocessing in a Windows NT Server environment. Both systems will fail to initialize without the correct HAL. However, both systems will initialize with a uniprocessor HAL and kernel. The Compaq Windows NT SSD detects and installs the appropriate HAL during the installation process. To accomplish the migration safely, you must downgrade the system to a uniprocessor HAL and kernel, which can be run on both systems, before moving to the ProLiant 5000 Server. After successfully migrating all options, you must upgrade the system to a multiprocessor HAL and kernel. The Compaq SSD Setup Utility performs downgrades and upgrades for you. You need the Windows NT Server and Service Pack media to accomplish the procedure that follows. CAUTION: If the boot partition is formatted as NTFS, there is no easy recovery if the incorrect HAL is installed. Therefore, be careful with your selections. With Windows NT Server running on the ProLiant 4500 Server, follow these instructions to downgrade to a uniprocessor HAL: 1. Insert the Compaq SmartStart/Support Software CD in the CD-ROM drive. 2. The Compaq Diskette Builder will automatically start when the CD is inserted in the drive. From the Diskette Builder Utility license agreement window, click OK without selecting the I Agree check box. This will close the utility. 3. Select Start¡Programs¡Windows NT Explorer to start Windows NT Explorer 4. The Compaq SSD is located in the Cpssmst320a(D:)¡Cpqsupsw¡Ntssd folder. Depending on your configuration, the name of the CD-ROM folder may differ. 5. Double click on the Setup icon in the above folder to start the SSD utility. 6. Select Custom from the Setup Installations Options Menu. 7. Select the Convert to uniprocessor HAL check box and click the Downgrade button. 12
