Term RADIUS RSA SSID Subnet TCP UDP VPN WINS Wireless controller Glossary Definition Remote Authentication Dial-In User Service. Protocol for remote user authentication and accounting. Provides centralized management of usernames and passwords. Rivest-Shamir-Adleman. Public key encryption algorithm. Service Set Identifier. A case-sensitive, 32-alphanumeric character unique identifier used for naming wireless networks. The SSID differentiates one wireless network from another. All access points and devices trying to connect to a specific wireless network must use the same SSID to enable effective roaming. A portion of a network that shares a common address component. On TCP/IP networks, subnets are defined as all devices whose IP addresses have the same prefix. For example, all devices with IP addresses that start with 100.100.100 belong to the same subnet. Transmission Control Protocol. Protocol for transmitting data over the Internet with guaranteed reliability and in-order delivery. User Data Protocol. Protocol for transmitting data over the Internet quickly but with no guarantee of reliability or in-order delivery. Virtual private network. Network that enables IP traffic to travel securely over a public TCP/IP network by encrypting all traffic from one network to another. Uses tunneling to encrypt all information at the IP level. Windows Internet Name Service. Service for name resolution. Allows clients on different IP subnets to dynamically resolve addresses, register themselves, and browse the network without sending broadcasts.
