Each of these menus is described in this section of the manual. You may skip those menus that don't apply to your system, and you may wish to skip the VIDEO PICTURE SETTINGS submenu until you are more familiar with the system. Step One - System Setup In this step you will configure some basic system settings using the GENERAL SETUP menu. Press the Setup Button and the Enter Button as explained above to access the settings in this menu. Your screen should look similar to the one shown in Figure 21. DVD-Audio Mode: Select between DVD-Audio and DVD-Video modes. Many DVD-Audio discs are DVD-Video compatible, but the DVD-Video content may not be available at the same time as the DVD-Audio information. You may wish to hear the difference between the two recordings, or you may need to operate the DVD 48 in DVD-Video mode if your receiver doesn't have 6-channel analog audio inputs. Use this setting to select between the modes. Remove the current disc for this setting to have an effect. SACD Mode: Select between SACD and CD modes. Hybrid SACD discs contain a CD layer that is compatible with conventional compact disc players. If your receiver doesn't have 6-channel analog audio inputs, you won't be able to hear the SACD multichannel audio. To hear the conventional CD audio, adjust this setting. Remove the current disc for this setting to have an effect. Check the disc's jacket to find out whether it is a hybrid SACD; many SACD discs are not. OSD Language: This setting selects the language that will be used for the DVD 48's OSD menus and other system messages. The default is English, but you may select French, Spanish or Japanese. Parental Rating: The DVD 48's password system allows you to restrict viewing of certain materials that may not be suitable for younger members of the household by requiring the viewer to enter a password to view those materials. The system is based on rating information encoded in some DVDs that classifies materials into eight levels, roughly corresponding to the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) voluntary ratings system: Level 1 G: Corresponds to the MPAA's "G" (General Audiences) rating, and is considered suitable for all viewers. Level 2: Intermediate level between the "PG" and "G" ratings. Level 3 PG: Corresponds to the MPAA's "PG" (Parental Guidance) rating. Level 4 PG13: Corresponds to the MPAA's "PG-13" (Parental Guidance and 13 years old) rating. Level 5: Intermediate level between the "R" and "PG-13" ratings. Level 6 R: Corresponds to the MPAA's "R" (Restricted) rating. Level 7 NC17: Corresponds to the MPAA's "NC-17" (17 years and older) rating. Level 8 Adult: All DVDs, including adult materials, can be played. The DVD 48 is shipped from the factory with the parental control system set at Level 8 (no password is required to view any DVD), and with the password set to the four-digit code "1211." To activate the system, highlight the Parental Rating line of the GENERAL SETUP menu. The current rating level is shown. Press the ‹ or › Button, and you will see four dashed lines prompting you to enter the password. When you enter the correct code, you may use the ‹ /› Buttons to scroll through the rating level choices. When the desired rating level appears, you may move the cursor to the next setting. The first time you use the DVD 48, it is recommended that you scroll to the Parental Password setting to enter a new password. Enter the default password code "1211", and the screen shown in Figure 22 will appear. Enter a new four-digit code on the New Password line, and reenter the same code on the Confirm Password line. The DVD 48 will return to the GENERAL SETUP menu, and the new password will take effect. Figure 22 - New Password Screen NOTE: The same password code is used for Parental Rating, and for resetting the DVD 48 to its factory default, as described below. Screen Saver: The DVD 48 offers a Screen Saver option to protect your TV or video display from damage that may occur if the player is left turned on with the same still image for a period of time, as there is a possibility that the image may be "burned" into some display devices. 25
