Intel Server Management (ISM) Installation and User's Guide Intel Server Management (ISM) Concepts If the managed server already has an operating system installed, then you can remove the CD and let the server reboot after configuration. Step 3. Prepare for ISM Installation On a new managed server; before installing ISM and after running the Configuration Wizard and installing the server operating system; perform these steps: Use the OS to configure communication links between the management station and the managed server, such as a LAN connection. To use a direct serial link, you will need a null-modem cable. You must configure a serial connection on both the managed server and the management station. If you plan to use the LAN connection, you must connect the LAN to the NIC1 port. NOTE For the ISM management station features to function properly, the ISM network configuration of the managed server must be assigned to the "ethx" value associated with the lower port (NIC1) on the rear of the system. When configuring the system with internal network ports NIC1 and NIC2, and no other network port hardware is installed into the system, Red Hat Linux Advanced Server 2.1 will assign "eth0" to NIC2, and "eth1" to NIC1. In this case, eth1 must be configured for use with ISM. If additional network hardware has been installed into the system, Red Hat Linux Advanced Server 2.1 will first assign the "eth" numerical value to the add-on port or ports, then assign numerical "eth" values to the internal network ports last. As an example, if a dual port network card were added to the system, those ports would become "eth0" and "eth1." The internal network ports would become "eth2" for NIC2 and "eth3" for NIC1. In this case, "eth3" must be configured for use with ISM. 1. Connect the LAN cable to NIC port 1 (lower NIC port) on the rear panel of the server. 2. If you will use LAN Alerts (see page 24), or a third-party management software package or a third-party management software package, install and configure SNMP on the management station. 3. For Windows 2000/Windows 2003 systems, install SNMP as follows: a. Open the Control panel and select the Add/Remove Programs applet. b. Click on the Add/Remove Windows Components icon. c. Click the Management and Monitoring Tools checkbox and then the Next button. 4. On the managed server, specify these items when configuring SNMP: a. Community string names for SNMP Get and Set operations. b. Community string names for sending traps. c. The trap destination (IP address or name) of the client system that will run the third-party management console as the recipient of the traps. 5. Install and configure any third-party management software package you will use (this item is optional). Windows Preparation Follow these preparation steps before installing Windows. Before upgrading to this version of ISM, the system BIOS must be upgraded to the latest version.

Intel Server Management (ISM) Installation and User's Guide
Intel Server Management (ISM) Concepts
If the managed server already has an operating system installed, then you can remove the CD and let the
server reboot after configuration.
Step 3. Prepare for ISM Installation
On a new managed server; before installing ISM and after running the Configuration Wizard and installing
the server operating system; perform these steps:
Use the OS to configure communication links between the management station and the managed server,
such as a LAN connection. To use a direct serial link, you will need a null-modem cable. You must configure
a serial connection on both the managed server and the management station. If you plan to use the LAN
connection, you must connect the LAN to the NIC1 port.
NOTE
For the ISM management station features to function properly, the ISM network
configuration of the managed server must be assigned to the “ethx” value associated with the
lower port (NIC1) on the rear of the system.
When configuring the system with internal network ports NIC1 and NIC2, and no other
network port hardware is installed into the system,
Red Hat Linux Advanced Server 2.1
will
assign “eth0” to NIC2, and “eth1” to NIC1. In this case, eth1 must be configured for use with
ISM.
If additional network hardware has been installed into the system,
Red Hat Linux Advanced
Server 2.1
will first assign the “eth” numerical value to the add-on port or ports, then assign
numerical “eth” values to the internal network ports last. As an example, if a dual port
network card were added to the system, those ports would become “eth0” and “eth1.” The
internal network ports would become “eth2” for NIC2 and “eth3” for NIC1. In this case, “eth3”
must be configured for use with ISM.
1.
Connect the LAN cable to NIC port 1 (lower NIC port) on the rear panel of the server.
2.
If you will use LAN Alerts (see page 24), or a third-party management software package or a third-party
management software package, install and configure SNMP on the management station.
3.
For Windows 2000/Windows 2003 systems, install SNMP as follows:
a.
Open the Control panel and select the
Add/Remove Programs
applet.
b.
Click on the Add/Remove Windows Components icon.
c.
Click the Management and Monitoring Tools checkbox and then the Next button.
4.
On the managed server, specify these items when configuring SNMP:
a.
Community string names for SNMP Get and Set operations.
b.
Community string names for sending traps.
c.
The trap destination (IP address or name) of the client system that will run the third-party
management console as the recipient of the traps.
5.
Install and configure any third-party management software package you will use (this item is optional).
Windows Preparation
Follow these preparation steps before installing Windows. Before upgrading to this version of ISM, the
system BIOS must be upgraded to the latest version.
