Problem-solving checklist Follow these steps when trying to solve a problem with the device. Step number 1 2 3 4 Verification step Possible problems Solutions Is the power on? No power due to failed power source, cable, 1. switch, or fuse. When the device is connected 2. to a grounded power source and is turned on, the control panel shows Initializing..., and 3. the main motor rotates for approximately 10 seconds. Verify that the device is plugged in. Verify that the power cable is functional and that the power switch is on. Check the power source by plugging the device directly into the wall or into a different outlet. Motor does not rotate. 1. Verify that the print cartridge is installed correctly. See Changing the print cartridge on page 69. 2. Verify that the top cover is closed. Does Ready appear in the device control panel? The control panel should function without error messages. Control panel shows an error. See Control-panel messages on page 80 for a list of common messages that will help you correct the error. If the error persists, contact HP Customer Care. See HP Customer Care on page 108 or the support flyer that came in the device box. Do information pages print? Print a Configuration report. See Information pages on page 64. An error message appears on the controlpanel display. Media does not move smoothly through the device paper path. See Control-panel messages on page 80 for a list of common messages that will help you correct the error. Make sure that media that meets HP specifications. See Media specifications on page 13 Clean the paper path. See To clean the paper path on page 68. Poor print quality. See Print quality problems on page 83. If the error persists, contact HP Customer Care. See HP Customer Care on page 108 or the support flyer that came in the device box. Does the device copy? Poor copy quality from the flatbed. Place the Configuration report on the flatbed scanner and make a copy. 1. Clean the flatbed glass. See To clean the scanner glass on page 67. 2. If, after performing the maintenance, the problem persists, see Copy problems on page 91. If the error persists, contact HP Customer Care.
