Load balancing on HP Directors and Switches takes place automatically. local Synonym for channel-attached. local area network LAN. A computer network in a localized geographical area (for example, a building or campus), whose communications technology provides a high-bandwidth medium to which many nodes are connected (D). In Fibre Channel addressing, a logical unit number is a number assigned to a storage device which, in combination with the storage device's node port's World Wide Name represents a unique identifier for a logical device on a storage area network. Peripherals use LUNs to represent addresses. A small computer system interface (SCSI) device's address can have up to eight LUNs. login server Entity within the Fibre Channel fabric that receives and responds to login requests. loop A loop is a configuration of devices connected to the fabric via a fabric loop port (FL_Port) interface card. loop address In Fibre Channel protocol, a term indicating the unique ID of a node in Fibre Channel loop topology, sometimes referred to as a loop ID. loopback plug In a fiber optic environment, a type of duplex connector used to wrap the optical output signal of a device directly to the optical input.
