Chapter 3. Developing business process interfaces This chapter describes a suggested general approach for the development of the business process interfaces to be used in an IBM WebSphere Business Integration Server Express or Express plus system. The specific approach at your site may vary according to your requirements. Although more iterations at any point in the sequence may be required in an actual implementation, these steps provide a framework for your overall development effort. This chapter contains the following sections: v "Sequence of development tasks" Sequence of development tasks Many integration components in an interface depend upon and reference one another, so the tasks of developing each of the components are intertwined and iterative. It is recommended that you develop your integration components in the following order: 1. "Obtain connectors" 2. "Develop or modify application-specific business objects" on page 30 3. "Configure connectors" on page 30 4. "Test connectivity and application-specific business objects" on page 31 5. "Develop or modify generic business objects" on page 32 6. "Configure database connection pools" on page 33 7. "Develop and test maps and relationships" on page 33 8. "Develop and test collaboration templates" on page 33 9. "Configure connectors for business object support and associated maps" on page 35 10. "Create and configure collaboration objects" on page 35 11. "Deploy the interface" on page 35 Obtain connectors Identify and install the connectors you will use. Connectors communicate directly with the applications or technologies being integrated, and must meet their requirements. In turn, other integration components, such as application-specific business objects, depend, on the design of the connector. This makes connectors the logical starting point for your design. Connectors are installed to your system when you install adapters. A connector is part of the adapter. (Many adapters also include an Object Discovery Agent, which assists you in generating business objects that are specific to the application with which the connector interacts.) Adapters designed for certain technologies are provided with your installation of WebSphere Business Integration Server Express and Express Plus. If you are using © Copyright IBM Corp. 2001, 2004 29

to
your

Although
more

be
required
in

these
steps
provide
a
framework

sections:
v
“Sequence

Sequence

the

It
is

Identify
and
install
the
connectors
you
will
use.
Connectors
communicate
directly
with
the
applications
or
technologies
being
integrated,
and
must
meet
their
requirements.
In
turn,
other
integration
components,
such
as
application-specific
business
objects,
depend,
on
the
design
of
the
connector.
This
makes
connectors
the
logical
starting
point
for
your
design.
Connectors
are
installed
to
your
system
when
you
install
adapters.
A
connector
is
part
of
the
adapter.
(Many
adapters
also
include
an
Object
Discovery
Agent,
which
assists
you
in
generating
business
objects
that
are
specific
to
the
application
with
which
the
connector
interacts.)
