8 PACKAGING, HANDLING AND SET-UP Unpacking Bed Ends  For this procedure, refer to FIGURE 1 on page 28. 1. The bed end carton includes: • Two bed ends. • Four casters (two locking and two non-locking casters). • One drive shaft assembly in two pieces. When using the bed, basic precautions should always be followed, including the following:	11
Read all the instructions before using the bed.	11
DANGER - To reduce the risk of electric shock:	11
1. Always unplug the bed from the electrical outlet before cleaning.	11
WARNING - To reduce the risk of burns, fire, electric shock, or injury to persons:	11
1. Unplug from the outlet before servicing.	11
2. Close supervision is necessary when the bed is used by, or near children and/or disabled persons.	11
3. Use this bed only for its intended use as described in these instructions. DO NOT use attachments not recommended by the manufacturer.	11
4. NEVER operate this bed if it has a damaged cord or plug, if it is not working properly, if it has been dropped, damaged, or dropped into water. Return the bed to a service center for examination and repair.	11
5. Keep the cord away from heated surfaces.	11
6. DO NOT use outdoors.	11
7. Use masked or nasal type oxygen administering equipment only in conjunction with the manual/electric bed. The use of ANY other type of oxygen administering equipment can result in a fire hazard.	11

If a liquid is spilled in or around the electric bed, unplug the electric bed before cleaning. Clean up the spill and allow the electric bed or the area around the electric bed to dry thoroughly before using the electric controls again.	12
The manual/electric bed is not designed to be used as a patient transport. When transporting a patient, use an approved patient transport. Otherwise, injury or damage may result.	12
When operating/moving electric beds, ALWAYS ensure that the individual utilizing the bed is positioned properly within the confines of the bed. DO NOT let any extremities protrude over the side or between the bed rails when performing these functions.	12
After the electric bed has been assembled, always test to make sure that all sections of the electric bed are properly and securely in place before using.	12
Make sure head and foot springs/sections are connected securely to the bed ends before use.	12
The pendant and power cords MUST be routed and secured properly to ensure that the cords DO NOT become entangled, pinched and/or severed during operation of the electric bed.	12

1. Under the bed, locate the exposed shaft end according to the function you want to perform.	19

5.1 Washing Bed Ends	21

DO NOT wash head or foot section. AC motors and electronics are not water proof.	21
To protect flooring, ensure bed ends are completely drained and dry before placing on flooring. Otherwise, remaining dirty water may damage or stain flooring.	21
Avoid spraying water directly into the gear box ends. Otherwise, damage to the gear box may occur.	21
1. Stand or prop each bed end in an upright position on its legs.	21
2. Using a mild soap/detergent and soft bristle brush or sponge, scrub all exterior surfaces.	21
3. Using a hose and nozzle attachment, rinse bed ends thoroughly with plain cold or warm water.	21

Do not exceed a water temperature of 110° F.	21
Use household tap pressure. DO NOT use pressure washers or steam cleaners.	21
4. Tip bed end from side to side to allow any collected or trapped water to drain.	21
5. Thoroughly towel dry bed end and all components.	21

Invacare recommends the following maintenance and cleaning procedures be conducted between uses and at least once every three years. This form is provided as a guide to help with documentation.	22
Cleaning and Disinfecting Bed	22
Unplug the power cord of electric beds before performing maintenance.	22
Wipe down with disinfectant. Allow to dry completely.	22
Mechanical Inspection and Maintenance	22
Inspect all bed components for damage or excessive wear.	22
Visually examine all welds for cracks.	22
Inspect the head and foot spring sections for bending, warping or damage.	22
Check drive shaft and drive shaft connections for bending, damage or excessive wear.	22
Inspect pull tubes and mounting hardware for bending, damage or excessive wear.	22
Inspect all bolts and rivets to ensure that they are securely tightened and functioning properly.	22
Check sleep surfaces to ensure all links are intact.	22
Check casters to ensure they lock, if applicable, and roll properly.	22
Electrical Inspection and Maintenance	22
Inspect all electrical bed components for damage or excessive wear (i.e., cracked or broken housings, or worn components).	22
Check pendant, power and motor cords for chafing, cuts or excessive wear.	22
Make sure all plugs are fully attached and free of damage.	22

8.1 Receiving	27
1. Count cartons before signing shipping papers.	27
2. Designate someone at the facility to receive and inspect all merchandise. Use the master order acknowledgment to check off items as they are received.	27
3. Compare the number of cartons shipped with the number of cartons actually received and note such on the consignee copy of the freight bill. Make sure to have the truck driver sign the copy acknowledging the count.	27
4. If shortage occurs, IMMEDIATELY contact Invacare Customer Service department at (800) 333-6900.	27

1. Check bed components for any obvious damage to the carton or its contents. If damage is evident, contact your local Invacare dealer.	27

Examine each item carefully for scratches, nicks, dents or any other apparent damage.	29

1. Inspect the power supply cord and cables for cuts or damage to the cord and/or plug.	29
2. Inspect the junction box for any damage to the connectors.	29
3. Ensure that the motor plugs are plugged into the junction box and fit properly.	29

1. Remove the head section of the bed from the packing carton.	30

Place the head section on a flat surface so that the motor guards on the bottom of the frame are supporting the head section.	30
2. Remove the foot section of the bed from the packing carton.	30
3. Remove tie-wraps securing the cables for shipping (FIGURE 3 on page 31).	30

Place the foot section on a flat surface so that the motor guards on the bottom of the frame are supporting the foot section.	30

4. Align the inside of the head section with the inside of the foot section.	31

Locking pins are located on the foot section frame and will make an audible click when properly engaged with the head section frame.	31
5. Push the head section towards the foot section so that the head section frame slides into the foot section frame and the locking pins engage.	31
6. Ensure the locking pins are properly engaged by attempting to pull the head section from the foot section. If the sections separate, repeat STEP 5-6 until the locking pins are secure.	31
7. Install the bed ends. Refer to Installing/Removing Bed Ends on page 34.	31
8. Connect the crossover cable. Refer to Connecting Crossover Cable on page 37.	31
9. Assemble and install the drive shaft. Refer to Assembling/Installing/Removing Drive Shaft on page 40.	31
10. Activate the bed functions. Refer to Inspecting the Bed on page 44.	31
Disassembling	32
1. Lower the head and foot sections completely. Refer to Raising and Lowering on page 19.	32
2. Lower the bed to the lowest height. Refer to Raising and Lowering on page 19.	32
3. Remove the drive shaft. Refer to Assembling/Installing/Removing Drive Shaft on page 40.	32
4. Disconnect the crossover cable. For the crossover cable definition, Refer to Connecting Crossover Cable on page 37.	32
5. Remove both bed ends. Refer to Installing/Removing Bed Ends on page 34.	32

Place the bed on a flat surface so that the motor guards on the bottom of the frame are supporting the bed.	32
6. Starting with one side of bed, pull the release pin and pull the head section so that it starts to separate slightly from the foot section.	32

The drive shaft for the Hi/Lo function consists of two sections that are shipped unassembled. The inner shaft has a positioning spring button, and the outer shaft has three positioning holes, one storage position hole and a telescoping end.	40
1. Remove the plastic caps from each end of the drive shaft.	40
2. Press the spring button on the inner shaft and insert the inner shaft into the outer shaft.	40
3. Engage the spring button into the third positioning hole. Refer to FIGURE 9.	40

A common gear box is used on both bed ends. The bottom output shaft is used at the head end and the top output shaft is used at the foot end of the bed.	40
Before assembling the bed ensure the drive shaft cover of both gear boxes are in the correct position: up for the head end and down for the foot end. Refer to FIGURE 10.	40
4. Attach the inner shaft to the bottom gear box output shaft on the head end of the bed.	40
5. Push in on the spring loaded end of the drive shaft and attach to the Hi/Lo motor output shaft facing the head end of the bed.	40
