8 PACKAGING, HANDLING AND SET-UP Assembling/Installing/Removing Drive Shaft  For this procedure, refer to FIGURE 9 and FIGURE 10 on page 43. Reverse this procedure to remove the drive shaft. The drive shaft for the Hi/Lo function consists of two sections that are shipped unassembled. The inner shaft has a positioning spring button, and the outer shaft has three positioning holes, one storage position hole and a telescoping end. 1. Remove the plastic caps from each end of the drive shaft. 2. Press the spring button on the inner shaft and insert the inner shaft into the outer shaft. 3. Engage the spring button into the third positioning hole. Refer to FIGURE 9.  A common gear box is used on both bed ends. The bottom output shaft is used at the head end and the top output shaft is used at the foot end of the bed. Before assembling the bed ensure the drive shaft cover of both gear boxes are in the correct position: up for the head end and down for the foot end. Refer to FIGURE 10. 4. Attach the inner shaft to the bottom gear box output shaft on the head end of the bed. 5. When using the bed, basic precautions should always be followed, including the following:	11

1. Always unplug the bed from the electrical outlet before cleaning.	11

1. Unplug from the outlet before servicing.	11
2. Close supervision is necessary when the bed is used by, or near children and/or disabled persons.	11
3. Use this bed only for its intended use as described in these instructions. DO NOT use attachments not recommended by the manufacturer.	11
4. NEVER operate this bed if it has a damaged cord or plug, if it is not working properly, if it has been dropped, damaged, or dropped into water. Return the bed to a service center for examination and repair.	11
5. Keep the cord away from heated surfaces.	11

The manual/electric bed is not designed to be used as a patient transport. When transporting a patient, use an approved patient transport. Otherwise, injury or damage may result.	12
When operating/moving electric beds, ALWAYS ensure that the individual utilizing the bed is positioned properly within the confines of the bed. DO NOT let any extremities protrude over the side or between the bed rails when performing these functions.	12
After the electric bed has been assembled, always test to make sure that all sections of the electric bed are properly and securely in place before using.	12
Make sure head and foot springs/sections are connected securely to the bed ends before use.	12
The pendant and power cords MUST be routed and secured properly to ensure that the cords DO NOT become entangled, pinched and/or severed during operation of the electric bed.	12

5.1 Washing Bed Ends	21

To protect flooring, ensure bed ends are completely drained and dry before placing on flooring. Otherwise, remaining dirty water may damage or stain flooring.	21
Avoid spraying water directly into the gear box ends. Otherwise, damage to the gear box may occur.	21
1. Stand or prop each bed end in an upright position on its legs.	21
2. Using a mild soap/detergent and soft bristle brush or sponge, scrub all exterior surfaces.	21
3. Using a hose and nozzle attachment, rinse bed ends thoroughly with plain cold or warm water.	21

Use household tap pressure. DO NOT use pressure washers or steam cleaners.	21

Inspect all bolts and rivets to ensure that they are securely tightened and functioning properly.	22

1. Count cartons before signing shipping papers.	27
2. Designate someone at the facility to receive and inspect all merchandise. Use the master order acknowledgment to check off items as they are received.	27
3. Compare the number of cartons shipped with the number of cartons actually received and note such on the consignee copy of the freight bill. Make sure to have the truck driver sign the copy acknowledging the count.	27

1. Remove the head section of the bed from the packing carton.	30

Place the head section on a flat surface so that the motor guards on the bottom of the frame are supporting the head section.	30
2. Remove the foot section of the bed from the packing carton.	30
3. Remove tie-wraps securing the cables for shipping (FIGURE 3 on page 31).	30

4. Align the inside of the head section with the inside of the foot section.	31

Locking pins are located on the foot section frame and will make an audible click when properly engaged with the head section frame.	31
5. Push the head section towards the foot section so that the head section frame slides into the foot section frame and the locking pins engage.	31
6. Ensure the locking pins are properly engaged by attempting to pull the head section from the foot section. If the sections separate, repeat STEP 5-6 until the locking pins are secure.	31
7. Install the bed ends. Refer to Installing/Removing Bed Ends on page 34.	31
8. Connect the crossover cable. Refer to Connecting Crossover Cable on page 37.	31
9. Assemble and install the drive shaft. Refer to Assembling/Installing/Removing Drive Shaft on page 40.	31

1. Lower the head and foot sections completely. Refer to Raising and Lowering on page 19.	32

Assembling/Installing/Removing Drive Shaft

Remove the plastic caps from each end of the drive shaft.

Press the spring button on the inner shaft and insert the inner shaft into the outer shaft.

Engage the spring button into the third positioning hole. Refer to FIGURE 9.

Attach the inner shaft to the bottom gear box output shaft on the head end of the bed.

Push in on the spring loaded end of the drive shaft and attach to the Hi/Lo motor output shaft facing the head end of the bed.


