C Getting Good Results with Autofocus Autofocus performs best when there is contrast between the subject and the background and the subject is evenly lit. It does not perform well if the subject is very dark or moving rapidly, if there are objects of sharply differing brightness in the scene (e.g., the sun is behind the subject and their features are in deep shadow), or if the focus area contains objects at different distances from the camera (e.g., the subject is inside a cage). If the camera is unable to focus using autofocus, change the composition, press the shutter-release button halfway several times to refocus, or use focus lock (B 77) to focus on another subject at the same distance and then recompose the photograph. 20 Basic Photography and Playback
