HP Insight Management WBEM Providers give you a well-integrated set of standards-based management tools that are built on top of Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI). WMI is the Microsoft® implementation of Web-based Enterprise Management (WBEM), a set of industry-standard technologies for accessing system information in a distributed management environment. This paper provides information about moving from Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) to HP Insight Management WBEM Providers for Windows. There are some advantages to using Insight Providers for Windows:  Improved security over SNMP. As SNMP is not encrypted, it does not require strict credentials. The Insight Providers for Windows can run over http and https and require a valid account credential.  More transparent than SNMP, the Insight Providers run within the existing WMI Common Interface Model Object Manager (CIMOM), making the data collection agents more transparent. When upgrading to Insight Providers for Windows, you must decide how to incorporate its management capabilities. You can access the management infrastructure provided by the Insight Providers using the System Management Homepage (SMH), which is in the ProLiant Support Packs (PSPs). You can also configure HP Systems Insight Manager (HP SIM) version 5.2 and later to leverage Insight Providers for Windows infrastructure. Many client applications are available for WMI that let you interface with the Insight Providers. Additionally, you can easily write scripts for fully customized management. For more information, see the following web sites:  Using WMI: http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa393964.aspx  Scripting access to WMI: http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa393256.aspx  Further information: http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa390436.aspx Windows Server 2008 default configuration does not provide direct remote WMI access. See the "HP Insight Management WBEM Providers for Windows Server 2003 and Windows Server 2008 User Guide" at http://h18013.www1.hp.com/products/servers/management/wbem/documentation.html for instructions about enabling remote WMI access by using built-in firewall commands. Updates to the System Management Homepage The HP SIM SMH allows data collection from either the Insight Providers or SNMP agents. After you install Insight Providers for Windows, SMH uses it as its default data source. An SMH setting page allows you to set the data source and switch easily between the two (Insight Providers for Windows or SNMP). While the overall layout of the SMH remains the same, the individual sub-pages have undergone several changes. Although content and information are similar, the layout redesign provides a more user-friendly, faster interface. There are several changes to the SMH page:  A new Auto Refresh option is available for both data sources. When using Insight Providers for Windows as a data source, you can either manually refresh the information or set an Auto Refresh interval between 5 seconds and 30 minutes to get updates.  The System Box includes the following modifications: 2

Introduction
Meant to eventually replace SNMP, HP has introduced HP Insight Management WBEM Providers for
Windows, which improves management, security, reliability, and ease of use, while simplifying
integration with existing management tools and processes. HP Insight Management WBEM Providers
give you a well-integrated set of standards-based management tools that are built on top of Windows
Management Instrumentation (WMI). WMI is the Microsoft® implementation of Web-based Enterprise
Management (WBEM), a set of industry-standard technologies for accessing system information in a
distributed management environment. This paper provides information about moving from Simple
Network Management Protocol (SNMP) to HP Insight Management WBEM Providers for Windows.
There are some advantages to using Insight Providers for Windows:
Improved security over SNMP. As SNMP is not encrypted, it does not require strict credentials. The
Insight Providers for Windows can run over http and https and require a valid account credential.
More transparent than SNMP, the Insight Providers run within the existing WMI Common Interface
Model Object Manager (CIMOM), making the data collection agents more transparent.
When upgrading to Insight Providers for Windows, you must decide how to incorporate its
management capabilities. You can access the management infrastructure provided by the Insight
Providers using the System Management Homepage (SMH), which is in the ProLiant Support Packs
(PSPs). You can also configure HP Systems Insight Manager (HP SIM) version 5.2 and later to
leverage Insight Providers for Windows infrastructure. Many client applications are available for WMI
that let you interface with the Insight Providers. Additionally, you can easily write scripts for fully
customized management. For more information, see the following web sites:

Windows Server 2008 default configuration does not provide direct remote WMI access. See the

User Guide” at

instructions about enabling remote WMI access by using built-in firewall commands.
Updates to the System Management Homepage
The HP SIM SMH allows data collection from either the Insight Providers or SNMP agents. After you
install Insight Providers for Windows, SMH uses it as its default data source. An SMH setting page
allows you to set the data source and switch easily between the two (Insight Providers for Windows or
SNMP).
While the overall layout of the SMH remains the same, the individual sub-pages have undergone
several changes. Although content and information are similar, the layout redesign provides a more
user-friendly, faster interface.
There are several changes to the SMH page:
A new Auto Refresh option is available for both data sources. When using Insight Providers for
Windows as a data source, you can either manually refresh the information or set an Auto Refresh
interval between 5 seconds and 30 minutes to get updates.
