Installing memory modules Your server comes with a dual inline memory module (DIMM) installed on the system board in DIMM connector 1. Before you install memory modules, review the following information: • When installing additional memory modules, install the second memory module in DIMM connector 2. (See the illustration on page 24 for memory connector locations.) • Your xSeries 205 server supports 256 MB, 512 MB, and 1.0 GB DIMMs. Your server supports a minimum of 256 MB and a maximum of 2.0 GB of system memory. See the ServerProven list at http://www.ibm.com/pc/compat/ for a list of memory modules for use with your server. Complete the following steps to install a DIMM. Attention: When you handle static-sensitive devices, take precautions to avoid damage from static electricity. For details on handling these devices, see "Handling static-sensitive devices" on page 6. 1. Review the safety precautions listed in "Safety" on page v. 2. Turn off the server and peripheral devices and disconnect all external cables and power cords; then, remove the side cover (see "Removing the side cover" on page 8 for details). 3. Remove the frame-support bracket. See "Removing the frame-support bracket" on page 9 for details. 4. Touch the static-protective package containing the DIMM to any unpainted metal surface on the server. Then, remove the DIMM from the package. 5. Gently open the retaining clip on each end of the DIMM connector. Turn the DIMM so that the pins align correctly with the connector. 6. Insert the DIMM into the connector. Firmly press the DIMM straight down into the connector by applying pressure on both ends of the DIMM simultaneously. The retaining clips snap into the locked position when the DIMM is firmly seated in the connector. Chapter 2. Installing options 23

Installing memory modules
Your server comes with a dual inline memory module (DIMM) installed on the system
board in DIMM connector 1.
Before you install memory modules, review the following information:
When installing additional memory modules, install the second memory module in
DIMM connector 2. (See the illustration on page 24 for memory connector
locations.)
Your xSeries 205 server supports 256 MB, 512 MB, and 1.0 GB DIMMs. Your
server supports a minimum of 256 MB and a maximum of 2.0 GB of system
memory. See the ServerProven list at http://www.ibm.com/pc/compat/ for a list of
memory modules for use with your server.
Complete the following steps to install a DIMM.
Attention:
When you handle static-sensitive devices, take precautions to avoid
damage from static electricity. For details on handling these devices, see “Handling
static-sensitive devices” on page 6.
1.
Review the safety precautions listed in “Safety” on page v.
2.
Turn off the server and peripheral devices and disconnect all external cables and
power cords; then, remove the side cover (see “Removing the side cover” on page
8 for details).
3.
Remove the frame-support bracket. See “Removing the frame-support bracket” on
page 9 for details.
4.
Touch the static-protective package containing the DIMM to any unpainted metal
surface on the server. Then, remove the DIMM from the package.
5.
Gently open the retaining clip on each end of the DIMM connector.
Turn the
DIMM so that the pins align correctly with the connector.
6.
Insert the DIMM into the connector. Firmly press the DIMM straight down into the
connector by applying pressure on both ends of the DIMM simultaneously. The
retaining clips snap into the locked position when the DIMM is firmly seated in the
connector.
