4 RECEIVING AND TRANSMITTING Setting the Speech Compressor SSB mode The Speech Compressor increases the average RF output power, improving readability at the receiving station. This function compresses the transmitter audio input to increase the average audio output level. LThe function is effective for long-distance communication, or when propagation conditions are poor. 1. Select the SSB mode. (Example: USB) 2. Push FUNCTION . ••Opens the FUNCTION screen. 3. Be sure that the Speech Compressor is OFF. LIf the Speech Compressor is ON, touch [COMP] to turn it OFF. OFF FUNCTION screen (USB mode) 4. Touch EXIT to close the FUNCTION screen. 5. Touch the Multi-function meter to display the ALC meter. LTouching the Multi-function meter sets the meter to Po, SWR, ALC, COMP, VD or ID. ALC meter 6. Adjust the MIC GAIN (p. 3-10) to where the ALC meter reads within the 30 to 50% range of the ALC zone. 7. Touch the Multi-function meter again to display the COMP meter. 8. Push FUNCTION . ••Opens the FUNCTION screen. 9. Touch [COMP] to turn it ON. 1 2 3 4 10. Touch [COMP] for 1 second. 5 6 7 8 11. While speaking into the microphone at your 9 normal voice level, adjust the Speech Compressor level to where the COMP meter reads within the 10 COMP zone (10 to 20 dB range). 2. Push
FUNCTION

• Opens the FUNCTION screen.

Be sure that the Speech Compressor is OFF.

If the Speech Compressor is ON, touch [COMP] to
turn it OFF.

EXIT
to close the FUNCTION screen.

Touch the Multi-function meter to display the ALC
meter.

Adjust the MIC GAIN (p. 3-10) to where the ALC
meter reads within the 30 to 50% range of the
ALC zone.

Touch the Multi-function meter again to display
the COMP meter.

FUNCTION

• Opens the FUNCTION screen.

Touch [COMP] to turn it ON.
10. Touch [COMP] for 1 second.
11. While speaking into the microphone at your
normal voice level, adjust the Speech Compressor
level to where the COMP meter reads within the
COMP zone (10 to 20 dB range).
