DRIFT CUTTERS Thedrift cuttersare designedfor use in deep snow.Their useis optionalfor normalsnowconditions.Maneuverthe snowthrowerso that the cutterspenetratea high standingsnowdrift to assist snow fallingintothe augersfor throwing. CLEAN-OUT TOOL Thechute clean-outtool is convenientlyfastenedto the rear of the augerhousingwith a mountingclip. Shouldsnow and ice become lodgedin the chuteassemblyduring operation,proceedas followsto safelycleanthe chute assemblyand chute opening: Neveruseyour handsto clear a cloggedchuteassembly.Shut off engineand remainbehindhandlesuntilall movingparts have stoppedbeforeunclogging. 1. ReleaseboththeAuger Controland theWheeldrivecontrol. 2. Stopthe engineby removingthe key. 3. Removetheclean-outtool fromthe clip which securesit to the rear of theauger housing. 4. Usethe shovel-shapedend of theclean-outtoolto dislodgeand scoopanysnowandice whichhasformedin andnearthe chute assembly. 5. Refastentheclean-outtoolto themountingclipon the rearofthe augerhousing,reinserthe keyand startthesnowthrower'sengine. 6. Whilestandingin the operator'sposition(behindthe snow thrower),engagethe augercontrol for a few secondsto clearany remainingsnowand ice fromthe chute assembly. BEFORE STARTING ENGINE Read,understand,and followall instructionsand warningson the machineand in this manualbeforeoperating. Oil Theunit was shippedwith oil in the engine.Checkoil levelbeforeeach operationto ensureadequateoil in the engine.For furtherinstructions, referto the Service& Maintenancesectionof this manual. 1. Removethedipstickfrom the oil fill. 2. Checkand makesurethat the levelof oil is up to the FULLmark on the dipstick. NOTE:Do NOTscrewthe screwtheoil cap in to checkthe oil level. 3. If theoil levelis not up to FULL,pour fresh motoroil (5W-30,with a minimumclassificationof SF/SG/SH/SJ)slowlythroughthe opening.Replaceoil fill dipstickand checkoil levelagain. Gasoline • Makesurethat the containerfrom whichyou pourthe gasolineis cleanand free from rust or otherforeignparticles. • Alwaysfill the fuel tank outdoorsand use a funnelor spout to preventspilling. • Fillfuel tank withclean, fresh,unleadedgasolinewith a minimum of 87 octane.Freshfuel preventsgum fromformingin the fuel systemor on essentialcarburetorparts.Purchasefuelin a quantitythat canbe usedwithin30 days. • Neverfill the fuel tank completely.Fillthe tank to within 1-1/2" from the topto providespacefor expansiond fuel. • Makesureto wipeoff any spilledfuel beforestartingthe engine. STARTING THE ENGINE 1. Makecertainboththe augercontrol and wheeldrive controlare in the disengaged(released)position. 2. Insertkeyinto slot. Makesureit snaps intoplace. Donot attempt to turn the key. NOTE:Theenginecannot startwithoutthe keyfully insertedintothe ignitionswitch. Electric Starter Theoptionalelectricstarteris equippedwith a groundedthree-wire powercordand plug,and is designedto operateon 120volt AC householdcurrent.It mustbe usedwith a properlygroundedthreeprong receptacleat all timesto avoidthe possibilityof electricshock. Followall instructionscarefullyprior to operatingthe electricstarter. Determinethat your home'swiringis a three-wiregroundedsystem. Ask a licensedelectricianif youare notcertain. If you havea groundedthree-prongreceptacle,proceedas follows: 1. Plugthe extensioncord intothe outlet locatedon the engine's surface.Plug theother end of extensioncord intoa three-prong 120-volt,grounded,ACoutlet in a well-ventilatedarea. I,,"1 2. Rotatechokecontrolto FULL chokeposition(fora cold engine start). NOTE:If theengine is alreadywarm,placechokecontrolin the RUN positioninsteadof CHOKE IJl position. 3. Pushprimerthree(3x) times,makingsureto cover vent hole whenpushing.If engineis warm,pushprimeronlyonce.Always covervent hole whenpushing.Coolweathermay requirepriming to be repeated. 4. Pushstarterbutton to startengine. Toprolongstarterlife, use short startingcycles(5 secondsmaximum thenwait one minute). 5. Useextremecarewhenhandlinggasoline.Gasolineis extremely flammableand the vaporsare explosive.Never fuel the machine indoorsor whilethe engineis hot or running.Extinguishcigarettes, cigars, pipesand othersourcesof ignition. 6. Storegasolineina clean, approvedcontainerand keepthecap in placeon the container. 15 Oncethe enginestarts, immediatelyreleasestarterbutton.The electricstarteris equippedwith thermaloverloadprotection; systemwill temporarilyshut-downto allowstarterto cool if electric starterbecomesoverloaded. As the enginewarms,slowlyrotatethe chokecontrolto the RUN position.If the enginefalters, restartengineand run with choke at half-chokepositionfora short periodof time,and thenslowly rotatethechoke into the RUNposition.

2.
Stopthe engineby removingthe key.
3.

4.
Usetheshovel-shapedendoftheclean-outtooltodislodgeand
scoopanysnowandice whichhasformedin andnearthe chute
assembly.
5.
Refastentheclean-outtoolto themountingcliponthe rearofthe
augerhousing,reinserthekeyandstartthesnowthrower'sengine.
6.
Whilestandinginthe operator'sposition(behindthe snow
thrower),engagethe augercontrolfor afewsecondsto clearany
remainingsnowandicefromthechuteassembly.
BEFORE
STARTING
ENGINE
Read,understand,andfollowall instructionsandwarningson the
machineandin thismanualbeforeoperating.
Oil
Theunit was shippedwith oil in the engine.Checkoil levelbeforeeach
operationto ensureadequateoilin the engine.For furtherinstructions,
referto the Service& Maintenancesectionof thismanual.

Removethedipstickfromtheoilfill.
2.
Checkand makesurethat the levelof oil is up to the FULLmark
onthedipstick.

prongreceptacleat all timesto avoidthe possibilityof electricshock.
Followall instructionscarefullypriortooperatingtheelectricstarter.
Determine
thatyour home'swiringis a three-wiregroundedsystem.
Ask a licensedelectricianif youare notcertain.
Ifyouhavea groundedthree-prongreceptacle,proceedasfollows:
1.
Plugthe extensioncord intothe outletlocatedonthe engine's
surface.Plugtheother endof extensioncord intoa three-prong
120-volt,grounded,ACoutletinawell-ventilatedarea.

Toprolongstarterlife,useshortstartingcycles(5secondsmaximum
thenwait one minute).
5.
Oncetheenginestarts,immediatelyreleasestarterbutton.The
electricstarteris equippedwiththermaloverloadprotection;
systemwill temporarilyshut-downto allowstarterto cool if electric
starterbecomesoverloaded.
6.
As the enginewarms,slowlyrotatethe chokecontrolto the RUN
position.Iftheenginefalters,restartengineandrunwithchoke
at half-chokepositionfora short periodof time,and thenslowly
rotatethechoke into the RUNposition.
