When you enable auto, the system performs and automatic discovery to determine the optics installed and configure the appropriate speed. When you configure a speed for the 1000/10000 interface, you should confirm name command setting. Both sides of the link should have auto-negotiation either enabled or disabled. For speed settings of 1000 or auto, the software sets the link to auto-negotiation and you cannot change that setting. In FTOS, the command speed 1000 is an exact equivalent of speed auto 1000 in IOS.
