IPv6 Link Local Islands When Microsoft began rolling out Windows NT, DHCP was used to automatically assign IPv4 addresses and the Windows Internet Naming Service (WINS) provided a server based name resolution. We'll assume that the IPv4 Router is acting as a DHCPv4 Relay agent. The DHCPv4 server is also providing options to clients and one of those options is the NetBIOS name server or WINS server option, which provides the IPv4 address of the WINS server. DHCPv4 clients that support WINS will use this option to register their names with WINS as well as lookup names to IPv4 address mappings. WINS only supports IPv4. 11
