DNS LLMNR WINS NetBIOS Figure 2 - The Vista Resolver Microsoft's Vista resolver is doing a lot of work trying to find out the IP address or IP addresses for the name "mfp1". First, the name "mfp1" is a single label name. In contrast, "mfp1.example.com" would be a multi-label name. The resolver must perform the most work with single label names because single label names can fit a variety of name resolution protocols and Vista1 may need to try all of them. If the name was a multi-label name, then only DNS would be used (Numbers 1 and 2 in Figure 2) because the other name resolution protocols only support single label names. Second, because the network is an ad-hoc network or Link Local network, there is no DNS configuration, no WINS configuration, and the lookup up LAN Manager hosts (LMHOSTS) is disabled by default.
