LLMNR Support in HP Jetdirect

Figure 3 - Two Link Local Networks The first thing that should be pointed out is that routing is not possible with these Link Local environments. A router is shown, but this router will not forward any link local traffic from one network to the other. In addition, the router will not forward destination IP addresses in the IPv4 Link Local Multicast range (224.0.0/24), any limited broadcast packets (255.255.255.255/32), or any subnet broadcasts (169.254.255.255/32). Therefore, a user on Vista1 executes the following command: "ping mfp2". The name resolution will fail because MFP2 will never receive any link local name resolution traffic. In short, Link Local Network 1 does not know Link Local Network 2 exists and vice versa. LLMNR Support in HP Jetdirect Just to shake things up a bit, HP Jetdirect introduced LLMNR support based on RFC 4795 in firmware versions V.38.XX and later, which was just introduced in 2008. As time goes on, LLMNR support in HP devices will gradually increase of course, but since it is not widely available, this whitepaper will cover LLMNR in separate sections. Let's look at a new diagram, Figure 4 - LLMNR. Figure 4 - LLMNR 9

Figure 3 - Two Link Local Networks
The first thing that should be pointed out is that routing is not possible with these Link Local
environments.
A router is shown, but this router will not forward any link local traffic from one
network to the other.
In addition, the router will not forward destination IP addresses in the IPv4 Link
Local Multicast range (224.0.0/24), any limited broadcast packets (255.255.255.255/32), or any
subnet broadcasts (169.254.255.255/32).
Therefore, a user on Vista1 executes the following
command: “ping mfp2”.
The name resolution will fail because MFP2 will never receive any link local
name resolution traffic.
In short, Link Local Network 1 does not know Link Local Network 2 exists and
vice versa.

Just to shake things up a bit, HP Jetdirect introduced LLMNR support based on RFC 4795 in firmware
versions V.38.XX and later, which was just introduced in 2008.
As time goes on, LLMNR support in
HP devices will gradually increase of course, but since it is not widely available, this whitepaper will
cover LLMNR in separate sections.
