Appendix A: Changing Vista's Preferences We can experiment with Vista preferences without having a device that supports IPv6. In the hosts file located in SystemRoot\System32\Drivers\Etc, there are two entries by default: 127.0.0.1 ::1 localhost localhost These entries refer to the loopback address which is used to "loop back" networking traffic through the stack and back to an application without going on the actual network itself. Because there are two records for the name "localhost", one IPv4 and IPv6 address, and Microsoft's Vista will prefer IPv6 addresses in the default configuration, IPv6 should be used when the command "ping localhost" is executed.
