Figure 21 - Firewall Policy Rules are processed in order. The first rule will drop any management protocol, such as SNMP, that is being carried by IPv6. IPv4 is not affected by this rule. The next two rules allow IPv4 and IPv6 for any remaining traffic that was not handled by Rule 1. In this way, we can force management access to only work over IPv4. For products that support IPsec, the Firewall can be used to force IPsec to be used for certain services, like management services. All an all, the Firewall provided by HP Jetdirect allows for a variety of configurations and a lot of flexibility for the administrator. Summary Microsoft's Vista, Windows Server 2008, and the new HP Printing and Imaging devices will have IPv6 enabled by default. As these devices are deployed in our existing IPv4 environments, we can see how name resolution plays a fundamental process in the Dual-Stack transition methods. Using the name resolution algorithm in Vista, we went through various network environments and studied how the introduction of routable IPv6 addresses will affect network applications. Through the same name resolution mentality, we also discussed DHCPv6, SLAAC, the impact to DNS, and made some recommendations. Hopefully all of the issues discussed in this whitepaper will prompt its readers to create their own IPv6 transition plan! 33
