186 Chapter 13-Glossary spine trim size The space between adjacent pages on a printed sheet. spot color A special ink color, not included in the process color set, that is used to specify the color of a graphic design element. spot color library A collection of spot colors for which spotless color recipes are sought. A spot color library contains one or more spot colors. Each spot color includes a name and a CIELAB color space. step and repeat The procedure of copying the same image by stepping it in position both horizontally and vertically according to a predetermined layout. stochastic screening A digital screening process that converts images into very small dots of equal size and variable spacing. Also referred to as frequency-modulated (FM) screening. substrate Any printing surface to which ink will adhere. Also referred to as stock. TIFF Acronym for Tagged Image File Format. TIFF is a file format used to describe, store, and exchange bitmap images. TIFF is crossplatform, highly flexible, and capable of saving a wide variety of image types, including photographs and illustrations. Most page makeup and image editing software supports TIFF.
