Speaker placement Placing the speakers for Surround effects Speaker placement plays an important role in the reproduction of Surround sound. The manner in which the speakers are placed varies depending on the size of the room and the wall coverings used in the room. The following shows an example of a layout for standard speaker placement. Refer to the example for placing the speakers appropriately in order to experience the best of Surround sound. At a minimum for Surround sound reproduction, two Front speakers and two Surround speakers are required. • The TX-SV828THX is capable of driving 2 speaker systems (A/B). • The subwoofer output of the TX-SV828THX is a line level out. THX SPEAKER SYSTEM • Use speakers approved by LUCASFILM THX. • Use left, right and center speakers placed at the same height and aim them toward the seated ear height position. • Use left and right surround speakers placed above 1m (3 feet) the listener's ear level, and generally to the sides of the listeners. • Since sound emanates from the front and rear of the surround speakers, listeners will hear specious sounds reflected from surfaces in the room. • Other surround speaker locations may also be acceptable as long as the null is pointed toward the listening area. • Place the subwoofer for smoothest bass in the listening room. Refer to the instruction manual included with your speakers for more details. Large/THX: Use when center speaker is a large, wideband type, or when THX-certified Front speakers are used, in conjunction with a subwoofer. Small: Use when the center speaker is small and has limited bass signal handling. In this mode, sounds under 100Hz are split out to the left and right speakers. NONE: When no center speaker is used. The center channel signal is split between the Left and Right speakers. Producing similar result to that of a center speaker. When the STEREO/MONO setting is set to MONO ON: The monaural sound will come from the center speaker. NONE: A monaural sound will come from the left and right speakers. The placement of the Subwoofer does not affect the final quality of the sound image too much, so you can install it more with the room layout in mind. To especially enjoy AN surround, a subwoofer or two subwoofers can bring out the best performance of Dolby Pro Logic and HOME THX Surround. Since ONKYO's THXPS- I subwoofer uses two subwoofer speakers, place one under the left speaker and one under the right speaker at the front of the room. When using this system in a room larger than 3000 ft3, connect two THXPS-1 subwoofer pairs (four cabinets). Two THX PS-1 systems are required for full bass signal output level. 7
