TROUBLESHOOTING WARNING! Always stop the unit and disconnect the spark plug before performing all of the recommended remedies below except remedies that require operation of the unit. TROUBLE: Engine will not start or will run only a few seconds after starting. CAUSE 1. Ignition switch off. 2. Engine flooded. 3. Fuel tank empty. 4. Spark plug not firing. 5. Fuel not reaching carburetor. REMEDY • See "STARTING" in the STARTING AND STOPPING section. • See "Starting a Flooded Engine" in the OPERATION section. • Fill tank with correct fuel mixture. See "FUELING THE ENGINE" in the STARTING AND STOPPING section. • Install new spark plug. See "SPARK PLUG" in the MAINTENANCE section. • Check for dirty fuel filter; replace. • Check for kinked or split fuel line; repair or replace. TROUBLE: Engine will not idle properly. CAUSE 1. Idle speed r e q u i r e s adjustment. 2. Carburetor requires adjustment. REMEDY • See "CARBURETOR ADJUSTMENT" in the MAINTENANCE Section. • Contact an authorized service dealer. TROUBLE: Engine will not accelerate, lacks power, or dies under a load. CAUSE 1. Air filter dirty. 2. Spark plug fouled. 3. Chain brake locked. 4. Carburetor requires adjustment. REMEDY • Clean or replace air filter. • Clean or replace plug and regap. • Unlock chain brake. See "STARTING POSITION" in the STARTING AND STOPPING section. • Contact an authorized service dealer. TROUBLE: Engine smokes excessively. CAUSE 1. Too much oil mixed with gasoline. REMEDY • Empty fuel tank and refill with correct fuel mixture. TROUBLE: Chain moves at idle speed. CAUSE 1. Idle speed r e q u i r e s adjustment. 2. Clutch requires repair. REMEDY • See "CARBURETOR ADJUSTMENT" in the MAINTENANCE Section. • Contact an authorized service dealer. 16
