42 Getting Started Setting up your computer ❖ Connect a local printer (see Connecting a printer on page 46) ❖ Install PC Cards (see Using PC Cards on page 176) Installing additional memory (optional) Your computer comes with enough memory to run most popular applications. However, you may want to increase the computer's memory if you use complex software or process large amounts of data. With additional memory, the computer: ❖ Can run more programs and open more documents at the same time ❖ Will run your Windows operating system and Windows applications faster Installing a memory module If you are adding memory after you have started to use the computer, begin at step 1. If you have not yet used the computer, skip to step 3. 1 If the computer is on, click Start, then click Shut Down. 2 In the Shut down Windows dialog box, select Shut down, then click OK. Windows Millennium Edition shuts off the computer. 3 Remove any cables connected to the computer. 4 Close the display panel and turn the computer upside down. 5 Using a small Standard #1 Phillips screwdriver, remove the screw that secures the memory slot cover, then remove the cover.
