Removing jumper cables 1. Always remove the jumper cables in the reverse order. Remove the negative ( ) end of the jumper cable from the metallic surface on the engine or frame of the disabled vehicle. Remove the negative ( ) cable from the booster battery. Remove the positive (+) cable from the booster battery. Remove the other end of the positive (+) cable from the discharged battery. 2. 3. 4. After the vehicle is started, let it idle for a while to let the engine "relearn" its idle conditions. Drive it around for a while with all electrical accessories turned off to let the battery recharge. You may need to use a battery charger to fully recharge the battery. If you need to replace your battery, see Battery in the Servicing Your Vehicle chapter. Changing a Tire If you get a flat tire while you are driving, do not apply the brake heavily. Instead, gradually decrease the speed. Hold the steering wheel firmly and slowly move to a safe place on the side of the road. Park on a level spot, turn off the ignition, set the parking brake, and turn on the hazard flashers. NOTE: Tire sealants that are injected through the valve stem are not to be used to service punctured tires because they can produce wheel rust and tire imbalance. 221
