Shut down the computer. If you are unsure whether the computer is off or in Hibernation, turn the computer on, and then shut it down through the operating system. 2. Disconnect all external devices connected to the computer. 3. Disconnect the power from the computer by first unplugging the power cord from the AC outlet and then unplugging the AC adapter from the computer. 4. Remove the battery (see Battery on page 50). 5. Remove the following components: a. Hard drive (see Hard drive on page 51) b. Optical drive (see Optical drive on page 59) c. Switch cover and keyboard (see Switch cover and keyboard on page 61) d. Speakers (see Speakers on page 66) e. Display assembly (see Display assembly on page 67) f. Top cover (see Top cover on page 74) g. System board (see System board on page 83) Remove the heat sink: NOTE: Steps 1 through 3 apply only to HP Compaq 6730s Notebook PC models with discrete subsystem memory on the system board. See steps 4 through 6 for removing the heat sink on HP Compaq 6730s Notebook PC models with Intel processor and UMA subsystem memory. See steps 7 through 9 for removing the heat sink on HP Compaq 6735s Notebook PC models with AMD processor and UMA subsystem memory. 1. Turn the system board upside down, with the audio connectors toward you. 2. Before removing the heat sink, follow these steps:
1.
Shut down the computer. If you are unsure whether the computer is off or in Hibernation, turn the

Remove the heat sink:
NOTE:

1.
Turn the system board upside down, with the audio connectors toward you.
2.
Following the 1, 2, 3, 4 sequence stamped into the heat sink, loosen the four screws

around
the processor.
