Technical Notes and Index Problem No sound when shutter is released. AF-assist illuminator does not light (L26 only). Images appear smeared. Colors are unnatural. Randomly spaced bright pixels ("noise") appear in image. Images are too dark (underexposed). Images are too bright (overexposed). Unexpected results when flash set to V (auto with red-eye reduction). F12 Cause/Solution A • Off is selected for Sound settings > Shutter sound in setup menu. No sound is heard with some shooting modes and settings, even when On is selected. • Do not block the speaker. 86, E52 3, 5 Off is selected for the AF assist option in the setup menu. AF-assist illuminator may not light depending on the current scene mode, even when Auto is selected. 86, E51 Lens is dirty. Clean lens. F7 White balance or hue is not adjusted properly. 39, 48, E24 The subject is dark, so shutter speed is too slow or ISO sensitivity is too high. Noise can be reduced by using 50 flash. • The flash mode is set to W (off). • Flash window is blocked. • Subject is beyond flash range. • Adjust exposure compensation. • Subject is backlit. Select Backlighting scene mode or set the flash mode setting to X (fill flash). 50 23 50 57 40, 50 Adjust exposure compensation. 57 When taking pictures with V (auto with red-eye reduction) or fill flash with slow sync and red-eye reduction in Night portrait (either in easy auto mode or the Night portrait scene mode), red-eye reduction may be applied to areas not affected by red-eye in rare cases. Use auto mode or any scene mode other than Night portrait, and change the flash mode to any setting other than V (auto with red-eye reduction) and try taking a picture again. 37, 50
