Practical hints Unlocking/locking manually X Turn mechanical key 1 back and remove it from the trunk lid lock. ! Always make sure there is sufficient overhead clearance. i If the vehicle has previously been locked using the SmartKey or with KEYLESS-GO, opening the tailgate from the inside will trigger the anti-theft alarm system. To cancel the alarm, insert the SmartKey in the starter switch. Locking the vehicle If you cannot lock the vehicle with the SmartKey or with KEYLESS-GO, lock it as follows: X Close the front passenger door, the rear doors, and the trunk/tailgate. X Open the driver's door. X Press the central locking switch (Y page 85). The locking knobs of the front passenger door and the rear doors move down. X If the vehicle battery is disconnected or drained: Press down the locking knobs of the front passenger door and the rear doors manually. X Exit the vehicle. X Sedan only: Check whether the trunk is locked. X Unlocking the tailgate (wagon) i This feature is available on the E 63 AMG unless the vehicle is equipped with foldable third-row seats. A minimum height clearance of 6.81 ft (2.07 m) is required to open the tailgate. Sedan only: If it is not locked, lock it with the mechanical key (Y page 93). Except for the driver's door, the vehicle should now be locked. X Close the driver's door. $ Locking 2 Mechanical key X 1 Emergency release lever 2 Cover X Remove cover 2 from the trim on the tailgate. X Push emergency release lever 1 in direction of arrow. X Lift the tailgate. Remove mechanical key 2 from the SmartKey (Y page 343). X Insert mechanical key 2 into the driver's door lock until it stops. X Turn mechanical key 2 clockwise to position $. The driver's door is locked. X Turn mechanical key 2 back and remove it from the driver's door lock. 344
