Glossary B bad segment Segment that is in an unknown state. background consistency check Option that forces the controller to constantly check all portions of disks used by all arrays to see if the disks can return data from the blocks. See also consistency check command. bootable array Array configured as the boot device. build Background initialization of a redundant array. The array is accessible throughout. RAID 1 copies the contents of the primary drive to a secondary drive. See also clear. bus See channel. C cache Fast-access memory on the controller that serves as intermediate storage for data that is read from, or written to, drives. capacity Total usable space available in megabytes or gigabytes. channel Any path, or bus, used for the transfer of data and the control of information between storage devices and a RAID controller. For Serial ATA channels, each channel has a single drive capacity. chunk See stripe. Glossary-2
