Main memory The amount of memory in the computer below 1MB that is available to your operating system and application programs-usually 640KB. Also called base or conventional memory. Math coprocessor See Coprocessor. MB Megabyte. A unit used to measure storage space in a computer's memory or on a disk. One megabyte equals 1,048,576 bytes or 1024KB. Memory The area where the computer stores data. Memory contents may be permanent (ROM) or temporary (RAM). See also ROM and RAM. Memory module An optional card that adds 2MB or 6MB of extended memory to your computer. Memory-resident program A program that remains in RAM so you can access it while another program is running. MHz Megahertz. A unit used to measure the oscillation frequency of a computer's internal timing clock. One megahertz is one million cycles per second. Microprocessor A CPU chip, such as the 486SLC.
