Subdirectory A disk directory that branches down from another directory or from the root directory. Suspend mode The power-saving mode our computer enters after you close the screen, press or when it detects a standby timeout period specified in the SETUP program. Switch An option you can add to a command that modifies the way the command works. Switches are usually preceded by a / (forward slash). For example, if you add the /S switch to the FORMAT command, MS-DOS installs the operating system on a diskette as it formats it. See also Parameter. Timeout period An amount of time you can specify using the SETUP program or VGACONF utility; if the hard disk or system is not accessed for the specified amount of time, the computer enters Suspend mode.
