Handling a Cartridge Generally observe the following protocols when handling cartridges: S Keep cartridges clean. S Inspect a cartridge before each use. S Do not put a damaged cartridge into a drive or LSM. S Do not open a cartridge. S Do not release a leader block and pull tape from a cartridge. S Do not handle tape that is outside the cartridge. S Do not expose the tape or cartridge to direct sunlight or moisture. S Do not expose a recorded cartridge to magnetic fields. Inspecting a Cartridge A defective or dirty cartridge can damage a drive. If you suspect a problem with a cartridge, inspect it for these defects: S Cracked or broken cartridge S Broken leader block S Broken leader block latch S Damaged write protect switch S Moisture S Labels not firmly attached or extending over the cartridge edge S Any other obvious damage 4-1
